Chantilly, VA – October, 20 2011 – Fourteen teams from the D.C. metro region met Friday to put their skills to test for the 2011 National Capital Region SWAT Competition. Audio Video Systems (AVS), a local design, systems and integration firm, sponsored two Fairfax County teams who finished in first and second place in the competition.
The yearly event took place at the Fairfax County Police Department Firearms Range, where teams competed in the handgun, obstacle challenge, sniper-initiated assault and tactical rescue events. Teams were scored on speed, accuracy and the perfection of missions.
Lieutenant Christopher Cochrane with the Fairfax County Police, SWAT division, commented “having the ability to build partnerships is the key to community-based policing, especially for SWAT teams. Thank you to AVS for their support and willingness to assist in enhancing the critical skills required to professionally serve all the citizens of Fairfax County.”
AVS was happy to support their local police department and excited to be able to be a part of such a prominent community event. “Most people don’t get to witness an event like this, so it was a real treat that AVS employees got to watch their local SWAT team in action,” said Whitney Michener, Marketing Specialist at AVS. “It’s important to be involved in community events, so I’m really glad that we were able to sponsor Fairfax County and are proud of their accomplishments.”
A SWAT (Special Weapons and Tactics) team is an elite unit within a police force, used for exceptional situations that require increased firepower or specialized tactics. The officers in a SWAT unit have undergone special training and have access to specialized gear beyond standard-issue police gear.
Next year’s competition will be held in September of 2012. Also, the World Police and Fire Games are coming to Fairfax, VA in 2015 – the 30th Anniversary of this international sporting event. It is held every two years and brings 7,000 – 12,000 athletes from 65 countries to compete over a 10-day period.
