Peter Barthelson
President and Founder

Peter has nearly thirty years of experience in the electronic systems field. Before starting AVS in 1992, he worked in various areas in the field including designing and manufacturing high quality audio electronic equipment with Amber Electronics, which he founded in 1978. Peter managed the development of the computer controlled intercom systems for ABC-TV to support the 1984 Summer Olympic Games. After the Olympics, Peter developed customized video presentation systems for many commercial, military and government clients. In 1988, he worked for RGB Technology and managed the development of high resolution briefing and presentation systems. Peter has an Interdisciplinary Degree, from the Echols Scholar Program at the University of Virginia with specialization in Electrical and Communications Systems Engineering. He also recently started and now operates a certified organic farm, Virginia Green Grocer, which produces a wide variety of vegetables, herbs and dairy products year-round.

Matt Komos, CTS
Chief Operating Officer

Matt manages the day-to-day operations at AVS, which includes overseeing the attainment of short and long term financial and operational goals; and the business development/sales, marketing, corporate, financial, HR, business and legal affairs departments. He is also responsible for planning, directing and approving the organizations’ operational policies, objectives and initiatives to ensure future growth. Matt has more than twenty-five years of professional experience in customer service, sales/marketing, and managing day-to-day operations of multi-million dollar businesses. His previous experience includes owning and managing MAK Enterprises, which specialized in exterior washing of commercial and residential properties, for ten years. Prior to that, Matt was President of Mary Meg Enterprises, a building services maintenance contractor in the Washington, D.C. region, for 15 years.

Barry Goldin, CTS
vICE pRESIDENT, OPERATIONS

Barry manages the Engineering, Integration, Project Management and Service Departments at AVS. He oversees the development of procedures designed to improve efficiencies at AVS. He has become a leader in the A/V industry and is currently on the Board of Directors of InfoComm International, the leading A/V professional association in the world. He is actively involved in important issues of the industry through participation on industry committees focused on increased education. With more than 20 years of professional experience in every aspect of the industry, Barry has a unique breadth of understanding regarding the AV system integration business. While at AVS, he has provided support to many high-profile projects including the Office of the Secretary of Defense (OSD) Executive Support Center (ESC), conference/command center support for the President of the United States, National Military Command Center (NMCC) at the Pentagon, and most recently, the Resource Situation Awareness Center (RSAC) at the Pentagon. Barry earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical Engineering from the University of Rochester.

Michele Ferreira, CTS
vice president, Sales and Marketing

As Vice President of Sales and Marketing at AVS, Michele oversees Sales, Marketing, Program and Business Development and Vendor Relations. She is responsible for building strategic partnerships with technology partners, systems integrators, and service providers. She supervises the company’s RFP process from soliciting RFPs to writing proposals for new business and is responsible for the development of new opportunities to expand the company’s market share. She also oversees corporate communications activities including public relations and marketing efforts. Michele oversees the day-to-day operations of large contracts and multi-site audiovisual system installations for government and military customers across the country. Prior to AVS, Michele was Director of Federal Sales at VBrick Systems, where she was responsible for creating strategic partnerships and sales of network-based MPEG streaming video solutions for broadband multimedia applications such as distance learning, content distribution, corporate training, e-commerce, telemedicine and surveillance. She has also managed sales teams in the federal market for companies such as the Oracle Corporation, TeleTV and ObjectFX. Prior to this, Michele worked as an engineer, defining and integrating technical solutions for the government. She has a Bachelors of Science in Electronic and Computer Engineering with an emphasis in Telecommunications and Robotics from George Mason University, Fairfax, VA.

Patrick DeZess, CTS-D
Engineering Manager

As the Engineering Manager at AVS, Patrick is responsible for the technical oversight and review of all system designs produced; evaluation of new technologies and equipment; and development and implementation of drawing and documentation standards. He also oversees the Engineering Department’s design, implementation and commissioning of audiovisual, video teleconferencing and command and control systems. Patrick has been extensively involved in developing detailed drawing packages and documentation control systems throughout his career as senior engineer. Patrick has more than ten years of professional experience in the design, engineering and implementation of audio/visual systems for both government and commercial clients. He has professional experience in design, construction, program management, and facilities management of computer and command center facilities. Patrick has a Bachelors of Science in Engineering from Roger Williams University, RI.

Randy Rose
Sales Manager

Mr. Rose directs and oversees AVS’ sales team. In this position he oversees policies, objectives, and initiatives; develops strategic sales and marketing objectives; establishes sales territories and quotas; manages budgets; and evaluates sales performance. He also supervises the company’s RFP process from soliciting RFPs to writing proposals for new business; and is responsible for the development of new opportunities to expand the company’s market share, client development activities, and working with external vendors and consultants.

Prior to AVS, Randy worked in sales for technology companies, including Fastcomm, which provided technology services to state, local and federal governments. He also worked for 13 years as a junior engineer for C3, Inc., where he assisted in implementing large IT systems for the federal government. Randy is also a veteran of the U.S. Army.

Kerry Wilt
Warehouse Manager

Mr. Wilt manages all warehouse operations and staff at AVS. He manages the delivery, inventory, tracking, and preparation of equipment for all of AVS’ installations. He also manages AVS’ fleet of delivery trucks and service vehicles. Prior to AVS, Mr. Wilt managed several major departments for Lowe’s home improvement stores. He also owned and operated Advantage Cleaning Service, a janitorial cleaning company, for more than 10 years. There he oversaw a staff of more than 50 people that handled cleaning services for contractors and corporations at locations up and down the East Coast.

Dick Alfers
Integration Manager

Dick Alfers has extensive expertise in all audio/video installation and electrical requirements for AVS projects. He is responsible for the management of workflow on the Integration/Installation Floor in-house at AVS. As the Integration Manager, Dick has varying responsibilities include the scheduling and management of dozens in-house and field personnel resources. Many projects also require his expertise in the field as well, as Dick holds a Master Electricians license. Prior to AVS, Dick was self-employed as an electrical contractor for six years. Other notable experience includes his employment with Mitre Corporation where he was a Facilities Foreman for 14 years.

Fred Doering, CTS
Service Manager

Fred Doering currently maintains the position of Service and QA Manager at Audio Video Systems, Inc. He is responsible for the assembly, installation, and maintenance of audio video systems. He performs system assembly and integration of new and installed systems. In addition, Fred performs setup, balance, fine tuning, and testing of audio, video and communication systems prior to customer acceptance. Prior to AVS, Fred was a Planning and Installation Engineer at Lockheed Martin Services, where he provided routine maintenance on projection, audio, video, broadband cable network and satellite downlink systems. As a Technical Director for all auditorium programs, Fred assisted in the planning and installation of updated projection, audio and video systems as required throughout the facility. As a Factory Service Technician at Pioneer Electronics, Fred established the first nationwide factory service network for industrial and consumer optical video disc hardware. He was responsible for Pioneer audio/video product warranty service and oversaw all aspects of the center's daily operations, including accounting, customer service, shop productivity and efficiency, sales support, training and field service.

Karyn Johnson
Human Resources Manager

Karyn manages Human Resources services, policies and programs for the entire company. Her responsibilities include: recruiting and staffing; organizational and space planning; employee orientation, development, and training; policy development and documentation; employee relations; compensation and benefits administration; and employee services and counseling. She also oversees AVS' administrative staff. Prior to AVS, Karyn managed the Human Resources departments at Reed Technology and Information Services for five years and at Infodata Systems for two years. She also was in the human resources department at TGX for 12 years as a manager and recruiter.
